Kirkin' o' the Tartan Service

Sunday August 31 at 9:30 am in the Main Pipe Band Competition Area

Join the Caledonian Club of San Francisco Chaplain, Bruce Cummings for the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan Sunday morning service — a cherished tradition of prayers and blessing at the annual Scottish Games.

The Rev. Peter Marshall is widely regarded as the originator of the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan service. During the Second World War, while serving at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., Rev. Marshall held prayer services to raise funds for British war relief. At one such service on April 27, 1941 (though some accounts cite May 1943), he delivered a sermon entitled “The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans.” From that moment, a tradition — and a legend — was born.
